Sustainable Weddings and Events at The Lowlands

Gathering together to celebrate, to share ideas and to form connections is vitally important to our health and happiness. That’s why we’re in the business of events, and why we’re so committed to creating beautiful spaces to bring people together. At The Lowlands each design element and amenity has been personally and carefully chosen, but we’re also excited to pull back the curtain and share a little of the behind the scenes considerations that set us apart.

The events industry has a complicated relationship with the environment. Food and floral waste, single use plastics, disposable dishes, printed materials and even the travel required to attend an event all add up to a pretty significant impact, especially if you zoom out and look at that on a global scale. Sustainability is a value that we are personally striving for always, and something that we’ve built into the framework of The Lowlands.

First, we are proud to partner with some really amazing catering companies that value social and environmental responsibility at their core. Food and drink make your event, no question. So, it’s a great place to start when looking for ways to reduce impact. We also have on-site organics recycling for food and floral waste and encourage all vendors to compost as much as possible. Our bar program features natural and sustainable wine and spirit offerings, with an emphasis on local and regional producers whenever possible. (Many of the wines we’ll offer can be found at Henry & Son, a favorite wine shop in Minneapolis!)

The landscaping at The Lowlands is designed to not only naturally manage rainwater and embrace native vegetation, but also features plant species that provide insect and butterfly habitats, while creating beautiful outdoor spaces.

We’re excited to continue learning ways to do more and use less as a business. As an individual planning with the best of intentions, creating a sustainable event can be intimidating. But small steps count, and there are many resources out there to help. Here are some of our favorites.
